Fall Lawn Care Advice
As fall approaches, hot summer temperatures often give way quickly to chill. This time of year brings conditions that homeowners need to be aware of.
Leaves gather in thick layers on many lawns. This can be detrimental to the lawn, in that if leaves are able to gather into wet clumps, this can result in bare areas in the lawn. This is equally possible if the leaves are mulched, but the pieces are allowed to gather into dense clumps close to the ground. If the lawn seems more brown than green after mulching, it might be good to mulch again. Finally, even if the leaves are loose on the lawn, a layer can block vital sunlight.
Some types of tree seeds, such as the spiked balls that sweet gum trees drop, can also cause damage to the lawn if left in large numbers on the lawn surface. These can more easily be gathered with a wire basket roller, that can be rented economically.
One common trend in fall is mowing the grass short prior to the end of the year. The Organic Turf Company recommends that this no be done, because grass grows more slowly in the fall, so cutting grass short limits the grass plants’ ability to store nutrients needed for winter.
